Police say actor Gary Collins is suspected of hitting a woman’s vehicle from behind Tuesday afternoon in Jackson, then leaving the scene before police arrived.

The collision occurred at 4:08 p.m. along I-55 frontage road near Old Canton Road.

Cheryl Hales, 40, of Jackson told police she was at a red light when a white Jeep ran into the back of her Ford Focus, Jackson police spokeswoman Colendula Green said.

The driver of the Jeep then fled the scene, Green said.

Hales and other witnesses obtained the license plate number and other descriptions that connected the vehicle to the 71-year-old Collins, Green said.

Hales signed an affidavit about what happened on Tuesday, and Collins was expected to be charged, Green said.

Collins has been arrested previously on traffic-related charges.

In January 2009, Collins was arrested in Santa Barbara, Calif., on suspicion of DUI. In 2007, he pleaded no contest to driving under the influence and served a four-day jail sentence in a Los Angeles suburb. Records also indicate he was convicted of DUI in 2004 in Malibu, Calif. In 2002, he faced a DUI-related charge in Simpson County but was cleared.

Collins is married to Mississippi native Mary Ann Mobley, an actress and former Miss Mississippi and Miss America 1967. The couple has lived in Brandon.
