It was a close one, but Michael Phelps is officially in seventh heaven.
He has now caught up to record holder Mark Spitz’s seven gold medal count set in 1972 at the Munich Games.
But it was no easy victory. The American swimmer won his seventh gold medal at the Beijing Olympics Saturday by out-touching Milorad Cavic of Serbia by one-hundredth of second in the 100-meter butterfly final.
An emotional Phelps screamed and flapped at the water after touching the wall first in 50.58 seconds to Cavic’s 50.59.
Alas, Phelps might even be human: the holder of 13 career gold medals didn’t set a world record in the race, which he had done in his previous six races.
Talk of a possible upset centered around fellow American Ian Crocker, who is the world record holder in the event. But it was Cavic who nearly spoiled Phelps’s victory. He lead most of the race – until Phelps out-touched him at the wall.
Following Phelps’s win, Mark Spitz addressed Phelps via satellite from Detroit during NBC’s Olympics broadcast. “One word comes to mind: Epic,” Spitz told Phelps. “What you did tonight was epic.”
Phelps has a chance to better Spitz’s record Sunday when he races in the 4×100 medley relay on the final day of swimming in Beijing.

Britney Spears is “manipulative and cunning”, according to her father,
Dad Jamie - who is officially the conservator of Britney’s financial affairs and estate - insists 26-year-old Britney has the ability to influence him, because she plays on their close relationship.
He told America’s OK! Magazine: “She sometimes calls me 50 times a day and asks me things that light my life up. But, like all daughters, she is very manipulative and cunning. So she gets what she wants a lot.”
Jamie also spoke about his feelings for Britney’s ex-husband Kevin Federline, who was recently awarded full custody of his two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, with the pop superstar.
He said: “Kevin has a wonderful heart. He wants them to raise these kids together. Kevin’s heart is right.”
Jamie insists his relationship with Britney has improved considerably since he became her conservator.
He added: “We’ve grown a lot. I’ve been able to come back into my daughter’s life, and that was an adjustment anyway, because I’m an alcoholic and it’s the first time we’ve really been able to share.”

Jennifer Aniston, showing no outward signs of grief over her breakup with John Mayer, got a pleasant surprise this week when she ran into Friends pal Courteney Cox at an L.A. restaurant.
“It was a pretty amazing scene. Jen was sitting at a table inside and then suddenly Courteney Cox walked in,” says a fellow diner at the Sunset Towers hotel’s restaurant Thursday night. “They were pretty surprised and excited to run into each other.”
Both appeared to be having business meetings over dinner, the diner says.
“Jen looked incredible,” says the diner. “Let me put it this way, it made me doubt the breakup story, because there is no way she was blue in any way. She was really happy … There was no hint of any problems.”
Since the breakup, Aniston, 39, and Mayer, 30, have settled back into their separate lives on different sides of the country, multiple sources tell PEOPLE.
Aniston has been spending time at her home in the Hollywood Hills, where she was visited several times by friend and yoga instructor Mandy Ingber.
Mayer, after arriving in New York on Thursday morning on a break from his current tour, kept an even lower profile. He is due back on tour in Charlotte, N.C., on Aug. 19.
The couple, who had been dating since April, split mutually, according to a friend of Mayer.
“They were going in different directions,” says the friend. “He’s at the height of his career and very focused. Different things are important to them both right now.”

Mariah Carey has been photographed being dried off by two assistants after she swam in the Mediterranean Sea.
The ‘Touch My Body’ singer, who has a reputation for being a diva, enjoyed a peaceful swim on her second honeymoon with husband Nick Cannon off the island of Capri.
As she emerged from the water, Mariah was quickly met by two assistants bearing towels, who then proceeded to ensure she was completely dry by rubbing her all over.|
A source said: “Mariah looked in absolute heaven as she was dried off. She just held out her arms to her side and let the assistants get rid of any water remaining on her body.”
Mariah, 38, has previously revealed she likes being called a diva because it means she is successful.
She said: “They throw that word around like it’s a Frisbee! I grew up hearing it, because my mother is an opera singer. The actual definition is ‘a talented female singer’. Definition two is ‘a difficult woman who is successful,’ I believe. So I take it as a compliment.”
Despite her reputation, Mariah insists she doesn’t make enough demands.
The 38-year-old star said: “You know what? I guess I am a diva in many ways! When it comes to certain things, yes, I can be difficult and a little bit rigid about what I want. Am I demanding? I don’t think I’m demanding enough.”

Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer have called it quits, multiple sources confirm to PEOPLE.
“They had a great time together but they are just in different places in their lives right now,” says a source of Aniston, 39, and Mayer, 30, who kicked off their courtship in April.
A friend of Mayer adds that a reconciliation isn’t necessarily out of the question: “He never ends things with a clean slate. He likes to dwell on these relationships and sort everything out before saying goodbye for good.”
The split was first reported Wednesday by the U.K.’s Mirror, which said the couple split earlier this week, after initially deciding to spend some time apart.
Reps for Aniston and Mayer have declined to comment.

Seth Rogen is planning to bring back movie hits Superbad and Pineapple Express with one cross-over sequel.
Rogen and Evan Goldberg creation Superbad was a box office hit in 2007, grossing $162 million off a relatively small $20 million (£10 million) budget.
Stoner comedy Pineapple Express is heading for similar heights, having already taken double its $25 million budget in just a week at the global box office.
And Rogen’s co-star in the movie, James Franco, reveals studio bosses are leaning on the 26 year old to write follow ups for both.
Franco tells MTV, “Even before Superbad came out, I think the studio was trying to get (Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg) to write a sequel, but they really didn’t want to write a sequel. And so, an answer to that was to do a Superbad/Pineapple Express crossover, an unprecedented crossover movie with two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie and somehow these characters get together, which doesn’t make sense at all, but could work.”

Batman star Christian Bale will not face charges relating to an alleged assault last month on his mother and sister, prosecutors said Thursday, suggesting their decision was based in part on the family members’ wishes.
Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service said there was insufficient evidence to afford a “realistic prospect of conviction,” and ordered police not to take any further action.
The service said in a statement that while it “treats all incidents which take place in a domestic context seriously, it is important that the views of complainants are also taken into account when making decisions in such cases.”
Bale, who denies the allegation, said through his spokeswoman, Jennifer Allen, that he was relieved the issue had been settled.
The actor “hopes to put the matter firmly behind him” and will be providing no further comment, Allen said in a statement released by Bale’s lawyers.
His family had previously declined to comment, saying the issue was a personal matter.
British media had reported that Bale’s mother and sister told police he assaulted them at his suite at the luxury Dorchester Hotel on July 20, a day before he attended the European premiere of his film “The Dark Knight.” Bale has denied the accusation.
The Sun tabloid reported that police waited a day to arrest Bale so he could attend the film’s premiere in London’s Leicester Square. He was questioned for several hours at a police station before being released on bail.
The Wales-born actor first made a splash in 1987 as the child star of Steven Spielberg’s “Empire of the Sun.” He has played dark and sometimes sinister roles in such films as “American Psycho,” “The Machinist” and “Batman Begins.”
In “The Dark Knight,” Bale reprises the role of wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter-ego Batman, a brooding vigilante superhero still scarred by the murder of his parents.
Bale, 34, lives in the Los Angeles area with his wife, Sibi Blazic, and their young daughter.

Pamela Anderson is reportedly dating a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family.
The former ‘Baywatch’ actress has only revealed her new beau’s name to a few select friends, but refers to him in conversation by the pet name she made up for him - Milk-Sheik or Milk for short.
The 41-year-old actress - who has two sons with ex-husband Tommy Lee - first met the royal when she visited Abu Dhabi in June with the Make a Wish Foundation.
Shortly after her trip, Pammie announced she is joining forces with the royal family to build an eco-friendly hotel in the city.
Since then, the actress’ new lover has visited her in her hometown of Los Angeles, where the couple were seen meeting up with friends at the Abbey, a gay bar in the city.
A source told E! online: “He is very handsome and Pammie looked very happy.”
Pammie - who is divorced from Tommy Lee, Kid Rock and Rick Salomon - has also been romantically linked to Criss Angel, Stephen Dorff, Dean Cain and Sylvester Stallone.

Christmas lunch with Al Pacino, working with Amy Winehouse and Kate Moss … and love life questions from airport security guards?
That’s how it is for Samantha Ronson, Lindsay Lohan’s celebrity deejay girlfriend, and her two hipster siblings, music producer Mark and fashion designer Charlotte, who open up about their high-profile lives in the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar.
When asked about la vida Lohan, a protective Ronson, 31 (who along with her older brother and twin sister dressed as the quirky title characters of the film The Royal Tenenbaums for the feature), says: “She’s great. She’s also 22 years old. I think people forget that.”
“With the Internet the way it is, one second we’re enemies, one second we’re best friends, one second we’re lovers, and then we’re broken up,” she continues.
Still, the DJ laughs off curiosity about her relationship with Lohan.
“Even the airport security guy in Canada asked me, ‘So is it true?’” she says. “It’s like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’m telling you.’ ”
In an e-mail to Harper’s, Lohan wrote, “I love the Ronsons. They’re close to my ♥ and I respect all the work they do.” But, she adds: “Samantha and my relationship is a private matter.”
The Ronsons also share stories about their unconventional childhood. Mom, Ann Dexter-Jones, was a socialite and dad, Laurence Ronson, was a real-estate heir and band manager.
The two later divorced and Dexter-Jones remarried Mick Jones of Foreigner, leading to family events with Keith Richards and Daryl Hall of R&B duo Hall & Oates.
But Christmas with Pacino was a huge highlight. Recalls Samantha: “I had just watched Scarface, and I don’t think I spoke.”
Described by her mom as a “renaissance child” who “had a tremendous curiosity and intensity,” Samantha grew up in London and New York with Charlotte, whose clothes are worn by Moss, and Mark, who racked up three Grammys after producing Winehouse’s breakthrough album, Back to Black.
Despite their glamorous upbringing, the Ronsons insist that their mother was far from lax.
Jokes Dexter-Jones: “I used to be nicknamed Mommy Dearest.”
The September issue of Harper’s Bazaar is on stands Aug. 19.
