Bill Clinton, Obama have ‘terrific conversation’

June 30th, 2008 by MrNick in Barrack Obama, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Politics

Obama called Clinton and they spoke for about 20 minutes Monday morning, the Obama campaign said.

Clinton wants to campaign “with and for” Obama after the hard-fought primary campaign between Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton, Clinton spokesman Matt McKenna said. Clinton “renewed his offer to do whatever he can to ensure Sen. Obama is our next president.”

Obama “had a terrific conversation with President Clinton and is honored to have his support in this campaign,” Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.

The chairman of Hillary Clinton’s unsuccessful presidential bid, Terry McAuliffe, said Sunday the former president was angered by media reports suggesting he did not plan to actively support Obama in the general election.

“He was angry that these ridiculous stories were out here, and these supposed close friends of the president — none of the close friends ever got called,” McAuliffe said, referring to anonymous sources quoted in some stories. “What happens, a lot of the time, is people like to pretend they’re close so they can tell the reporters that they’re close, but, you know, they’re just talking.”

McAuliffe said he spoke to Bill Clinton on Sunday morning. The former president recently returned from a trip to Europe.

Obama and Hillary Clinton appeared together Friday in Unity, New Hampshire, where the former first lady said of her ex-rival, “we may have started on different paths … [but] today our hearts are set on the same destination for America … to elect Barack Obama as the next president of the United States.”

The two had met the night before at a gathering of Clinton’s biggest political donors, at which Clinton delivered the maximum legal donations to Obama’s campaign from herself and her husband and Obama and his wife, Michelle, donated the maximum to Clinton’s campaign — which remains mired in debt.

But some analysts read bitterness into the fact that Bill Clinton did not appear at either event and had made no personal comments supporting Obama since his wife conceded the nomination. Instead, the former president released a statement through a spokesman saying he “is obviously committed to doing whatever he can and is asked to do” for Obama.

McAuliffe said Bill Clinton merely was waiting in order to avoid taking the public’s focus off Obama and Hillary Clinton’s joint appearances.

He also joked about rumors that the ex-president remains angry at Obama from the Democratic campaign.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore showed that there’s still time for fun in their hectic schedules, taking Scout to the go-kart track on Sunday. Ashton looks pretty silly stuffed into one of those cars, but we can’t see him having any problem getting into the competitive spirit. Even though the girls are all grown up now, it’s cute that these two aren’t afraid to act like a couple of kids — next stop, Disneyland?

The ‘Mean Girls’ actress’ dad Michael fathered a daughter while he was still married, although estranged at the time from Lindsay’s mother Dina.

Speaking about the relationship over 13 years ago, Michael - who has three other children, Michael, Ali and Cody, with Dina - told America’s OK! magazine: “Years later the woman contacted me, convincing me that I was the only person she was with and that she had my child.”
Michael - who married Dina in 1985 before they divorced in 2007 - has even written letters to the girl’s mother saying his illegitimate daughter “is beginning to look a lot like Linds, with a mix of Cody, believe it or not”.
He also sent his daughter a photograph of himself, which he signed ‘Love Daddy’.

The girl’s mother says that while Michael called his daughter on her 13th birthday in June and has had many conversations with her, he has never visited her or provided financial support.

LONDON —  Amy Winehouse was packing a punch at the Glastonbury music festival.

After taking the stage Saturday, the troubled singer climbed down into the pit and scuffled briefly with a reveler.

It was unclear what sparked the altercation but witnesses say a fan tried to grab Winehouse.

Winehouse sang for about an hour in front of an estimated crowd of 80,000.

She shocked fans last week by performing at a special birthday concert for Nelson Mandela.

The performance came just after she was hospitalized. Her father says she developed emphysema from smoking cigarettes and crack cocaine, although her spokeswoman has said Winehouse only has pre-emphysema symptoms.

Lindsay Lohan believes people judge her mental state by the clothes she wears.

June 28th, 2008 by MrNick in Celebrity, Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan believes people judge her mental state by the clothes she wears.
The ‘Mean Girls actress’ - who is rumoured to be in a lesbian relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson, the sister of super-producer Mark Ronson - is sick of constantly being judged on her appearance.

She said: “What you wear can tell a thousand stories. But those stories aren’t always correct. If I’m dressing down and look untidy people always think something bad is going on. But if I’m in heels and a great top, suddenly I’m back on board again. It’s ridiculous.”

The 21-year-old actress insists she tries to ignore the negative comments about her appearance, and always just wears what she wants.
She said: “Sometimes people say that I wear too many leggings, but I don’t care. I’ve always been pretty trapped into my sense of style and that’s always been important.”

Will Smith’s $150 Million Dollar Disaster

June 28th, 2008 by MrNick in Celebrity

There’s some idea out there in the world that Will Smith “owns” the July 4 holiday weekend in terms of box office. I guess this is because of “Independence Day,” one of my favorite movies, and “Men in Black,” also quite good, released, respectively, in 1996 and 1997 on that weekend.

Alas, all good hype must come to an end. “Hancock,” with which Sony is hoping to have a merry July 4, 2008, may not duplicate Smith’s previous successes. It is one of the worst family holiday weekend releases of recent memory — and jaw-droppingly so. And that’s hard to do, since it clocks in at a mere wisp of one hour and 20 minutes.

In such brevity there should be a reward. After all, “Hancock,” directed by Peter Berg, is shorter than most Woody Allen comedies. There’s nothing funny here, however, or witty or clever or even developed beyond an idea that should never have been executed in this way.

Imagine that the word “a-hole” — fully spoken out — is repeated over and over, and that its first appearance, in the movie’s first scene, is delivered by a child. Thus, the vulgarity begins. But unlike other crass films of this month, such as “Zohan” and “Love Guru,” the coarseness of “Hancock” is a wildly under-calculated mistake.

Hancock, preposterously, is an unwilling superhero. He’s a drunk, a hobo and — to be frank — an “a-hole” so lacking in charisma, charm or even bravado that there’s nowhere for him to go but down from a low rung on the ladder.

Unlike Smith’s cocky, smiling heroes of the past, Hancock is just offensive and stupid. His favorite warning to those he’s about to pulverize is an admonition that at least one of his villains will wind up with their head relocated in Hancock’s derriere. True enough, one time we get to see this and it’s not pretty. It’s not funny, either.

The screenplay, which is underdeveloped to the point of amazement for a Hollywood summer blockbuster, is credited to Vince Gilligan and Vincent Ngo. That they’ve done Smith a disservice is an understatement, but their other victims are Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman and a little boy named Jae Head. Their characters literally are abandoned to incoherence.

An hour and 20 minutes later, here are things you will not know: who Hancock is, where he and Theron came from (it’s telegraphed with the subtlety of a mallet that she has a past with him) and who the persons fighting them are (I have no idea).

This much we know: Hancock, whom we meet as he awakens on a park bench from a drinking binge, has powers of flight and super strength. He either can’t or doesn’t want to control them. He’s belligerent and obnoxious, a sort of anti-hero who in comic books usually is defeated by a good guy.

The latter is something he doesn’t want to be. When Bateman’s PR guy shows Hancock a bunch of comics featuring superheroes, Hancock’s response to each one is “Homo.” Charming.

It is said the legion of writers and directors who came and went before “Hancock” was initiated had a “black” comedy in mind — something that sent up the idea of superheroes. But a mess has been made in the process and $150 million wasted.

These people all forgot some truisms: In the end, a Will Smith movie with special effects released on July 4 weekend has to be family- and early teen-accessible. “Hancock” is neither. It’s often violent in realistic ways, the plot hinges on an extramarital affair and the main character lacks swagger, confidence and manners.

Columbia says “Hancock” is tracking well, and I’ll bet it’s right. The first couple of days — next Wednesday and Thursday — should be big. The fear, I’m sure, though, is that by Friday, July 4, the word will be out. By Sunday they’ll know exactly who’s head is up whose you know what.
