The Weinstein Company has announced that their Xmas gift to the world next year will be Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming movie, Django Unchained, which is currently casting.

Yes, Django is slated to be released on Christmas Day, which was also when Miramax debuted Jackie Brown in 1997.

Studios can set a prime release date for a block buster a good two years in advance before a frame of film is shot, which is clearly the case with all the movies coming out in December 2012, and Django will certainly be coming out during a very busy holiday season.

December 21, 2011 will see the release of The Lone Ranger starring Armie Hammer (The Social Network) in the title role, and Johnny Depp as Tonto, directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean), Judd Apatow’s prequel to Knocked Up, and The Life of Pi, starring Tobey Maguire, directed by Ang Lee, are also due on December 21, and the long awaited first installment of The Hobbit, will be released on December 14.

Tarantino wants Will Smith to play Django, but reportedly talks have “cooled,” with Smith’s interest in the project “waning.”

Other actors being considered for the role include Jamie Foxx, Idris Elba (The Office, Thor), and Chris Tucker. (What about Michael Jai White, who did a great job playing Mike Tyson in the HBO biopic of the fallen boxer, and was also in Kill Bill and The Dark Knight?)

Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly in “final negotiations” to play the Simon Legree style slave master, Calvin Candie, and Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz are also reportedly close to closing deals to star in the film as well.

Other actors rumored to be up for roles in Django include Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, 300), Treat Williams (Prince of the City), Keith Carradine (Nashville, Cowboys and Aliens), and Franco Nero, who played the title role in the original Django.

Quentin Tarantino is keen to work with Lindsay Lohan.

The ‘Kill Bill’ director is believed to want to work with the troubled 23-year-old star in an effort to bolster her movie career, which has taken a nosedive in recent years.

An insider is quoted by Absolute Now as saying: “Lindsay is just the kind of character Quentin loves.

“No one expects her to do anything significant on film ever again but he has at least one role he feels she would be perfect for. It’s a shocking, hardcore character but it will put her back on the map much as Quentin did for John Travolta.”

Lindsay had her breakthrough role in 1998 movie ‘The Parent Trap’, where she played twins who want to get their parents back together.

Since then she has done a number of cult teen films, including ‘Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen’ and ‘Mean Girls’, but her career has quietened in recent years.

Later this year she will star in crime thriller ‘Machete’ with Jessica Alba and Robert De Niro.

Quentin Tarantino is eyeing a romantic comedy for his next film project – because he’s convinced he could revolutionise the cheesy genre.

The filmmaker, who was nominated for the Best Director Oscar for Inglourious Basterds, is best known for helming action-packed and violent films including Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs – but he insists he’d love to try his hand at romance.

He tells Film.com, “I’d love to make a romantic comedy and take it out of the ghetto it’s been exiled to.

“I have done love stories, they’ve just been in my other movies. True Romance’s title was not ironic. Sure, James Gandolfini almost beats Patricia Arquette to death and she has to blow him away with a shotgun but that doesn’t mean it’s not romantic. It just has to be done my way and I think people want me to do it my way.”

Quentin Tarantino wants to cast Ringo Starr in one of his movies.

The ‘Death Proof’ director is keen to work with the Beatles drummer and says he always had a greater “presence” than his former bandmates.

Tarantino told Britain’s Liverpool Echo newspaper: “I’d pick Elvis over the Beatles any day of the week (NO DOUBT!)but there’s always something special about Ringo. I’ve always thought he had the best stage presence in the band.”

Ringo is no stranger to the big screen, having starred in the 1964 film ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ alongside fellow Beatles John Lennon, Sir Paul McCartney and George Harrison.

His thespian talents were also put to the test when he narrated the hugely popular British children’s TV series ‘Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends’ in the 1980s.

Tarantino – who plays a cowboy called Ringo in upcoming film ‘Sukiyaki Western Django’ – has developed a reputation for reinventing veteran stars.

‘Pulp Fiction’ has often been credited with reviving the career of John Travolta in 1994, while ‘Jackie Brown’ brought the 58-year-old Pam Grier out of obscurity in 1997.

No doubt Quentin can perform magic and he’s one of the best directors of all time, but I don’t see Ringo Starr as a star.
