Wesley Snipes jailed

Wesley Snipes was sentenced to three years in prison yesterday.

The Hollywood actor – who owed $2.8 million in unreturned tax bills from 1999 to 2001 – was condemned by Judge William Terrell Hodges for exhibiting a “history of contempt over a period of time” for US tax laws.

Snipes, 45, apologised for his “costly mistakes” and blamed his failure to pay on his lack of education.

Speaking at the court in Ocala, Florida, Snipes said: “I am an idealistic, naive, passionate, truth-seeking, spiritually motivated artist, unschooled in the science of law and finance.

“I am well-intentioned, but miseducated”.

During the hearing, Snipes’ lawyers offered letters from the star’s family members and friends – including Hollywood actors Denzel Washington and Woody Harrelson – speaking about his good character.

They had recommended Snipes be given home detention because he had no previous criminal record.

DEA Agents Not Happy With Portrayal in American Gangster

New York City Drug Enforcement agents are unhappy with the way they are depicted in Denzel Washington’s new movie, “American Gangster,” and now one of them is threatening legal action against Universal for what he claims are “false and defamatory statements.”

TMZ has obtained a cease and desist letter sent by Dominic Amorosa, attorney for Gregory Korniloff, to the General Counsel of NBC Universal, and cc’d to the President of the studio.

NBC Universal did not respond to requests for comment.

Korniloff is a retired NYC DEA agent, who is demanding a retraction of statements made in the movie. The letter claims that the movie, which portrays the life of Frank Lucas (Denzel), a Harlem heroin dealer in the ’60s and ’70s, incorrectly states that a third of NY DEA agents were convicted on charges related to Lucas. In addition, the letter alleges that several alleged facts in the movie are misleading, including heroin being smuggled in coffins, and the amount of money taken from Lucas’ home during a raid.

Korniloff was the case agent for the DEA and “personally participated in the search of Lucas’ house … and the arrest of Lucas on that same day.” Korniloff’s lawyer says the way the movie portrays that search “destroys the reputation of honest and courageous public servants by deliberately misrepresenting the facts.”

The “Deja Vu” actor became addicted to heroin after his parents divorced when he was 14 and he says he would be dead now if it wasn’t for the support of his mother Lynne.
He told Britain’s Live magazine: “When everyone was getting on with their lives, I was doing everything in my powers to shorten mine. Everyone was getting strung on heroin. In those situations everyone gets a tap on the shoulder at some point. Mine was starting to listen when I realized my mother really cared about me.”

The two-time Oscar-winner has also blasted fellow stars who complain about pressure of fame, as he has a different perspective on it.
He said: “It’s only acting. Sure, I’m recognized, but that’s not pressure. Pressure is being a 20-year-old kid in Iraq with a gun slung over his shoulder. It’s important to keep some perspective on all this.”
